Sidney Boultwood (1882-1958) was a professional photographer who operated 'Stickybacks' studios across England between 1911 and 1918

Sidney Boultwood and his Stickybacks Studios

[ABOVE] A portrait of the photographer Sidney Boultwood (1882-1958). Sidney Boulwood was born in Ramsgate, Kent, in 1882, the son of Mary Ann Jackson and Alfred Thomas Boultwood, a professional musician. Sidney Boulwood began his working life as a "Music Hall Artist", but by the time he was in his late twenties,  he had embarked on a new career as a professional photographer. Sidney Boulwood married Emily Louisa Coppen  in Southend-on-Sea in 1912. Sidney Boulwood established a string of "Stickyback" Photo Studios.

[ABOVE] A portrait of Mrs Emily Louisa Boultwood (formerly Coppen) photographed around 1912. Emily Louisa Coppen was born in Croydon, Surrey, in 1890, the eldest child of Emily Beeney and Frederick Charles Coppen, a schoolmaster. Emily Louisa Coppen  married Sidney Boultwood, in Southend-on-Sea in 1912.

[ABOVE] The photographer Sidney Boultwood in a mischievous mood, wearing his wife's hat for comic effect. This humorous shot was taken at Sidney's Stickybacks studio at 12 Victoria Avenue, Southend-on-Sea, Essex, which he operated between 1911 and 1912.

[ABOVE] The photographer Sidney Boultwood pictured at the wheel of his motor car around 1915. Mrs Emily Boultwood, Sidney's wife, sits at the rear of the car with her baby. Sidney Boultwood's Postcard Portraits of his Wife and Family

[ABOVE] A postcard portrait of Mrs Emily Boultwood and one of her children  photographed in Southampton in 1917. The child has been identified as Sidney Boultwood (born 1915). An inscription on the postcard reads " Sidney, 1 yr, 11 months" and the card is postmarked 18th April 1917.

[ABOVE] Sidney Boultwood junior (born 1915 Kidderminster), the baby son of Sidney and Emily Boultwood. This postcard portrait  was sent from Halifax to Mrs Emily Coppen, Emily's mother on 15th October 1915. [ABOVE] Sidney Boultwood junior (born 1915), posed standing on a table in Sidney Boultwood's studio in Southampton. (c1917). Sidney Boultwood junior was Sidney Boultwood's eldest son, the third of eight children.

[ABOVE] The message on the reverse of the postcard portrait shown on the left. The sender of this postcard was Eva Coppen (born 1900, Croydon, Surrey), a younger sister of  Mrs Emily Boultwood.  Seventeen year old Eva  Coppen had travelled down by train from Croydon to help Sidney Boultwood run his studio at 74 Above Bar, Southampton. The card was sent to Mrs Emily Coppen, Eva's mother.
[LEFT] Eva Coppen, the teenager who wrote the post card message reproduced above, pictured with her sister Emily's three children - Dorothy, Sidney and Eva Boultwood - at Sidney Boultwood's "Stickybacks" studio at 74 Above Bar, Southampton (c1916). The "Sticky Back" photo format was a fad between 1910 and 1918. Portraits produced in the cheap postcard format was by far the most commercially successful type of studio photography.

Mrs Emily Boultwood went on to have five more children. [ABOVE] Mrs Emily Boultwood photographed with her baby son Peter Boultwood (born 1923). Peter was the youngest of eight children borne by Emily. By this time Emily Boultwood was seriously ill with tuberculosis. Mrs Emily Boultwood died in 1928, aged 38.
