[ABOVE] Cabinet Portrait of  Emma and Harry Boniface by F H Robinson, 5 St Pancras, Chichester (c1902). Harry Boniface was born at Chidham, Sussex in 1877, the son of  Eliza Smith and John Boniface, a shepherd who worked on the rural land around Chichester. As a travelling shepherd, John Boniface and his family were constantly on the move, and Harry's siblings were born in the various villages scattered around Chichester and Bognor (e.g. Chidham, Bosham, Ancton and West Wittering). Harry Boniface married Emma Clara Blackman in 1904 in the West Sussex District of Petworth. In 1901, Emma Clara Blackman (born 1879, Amberley, Sussex) was employed as a Cook in domestic service at a house in the West Sussex village of Bury. I cannot trace Harry Boniface in the 1901 census, but given that Harry is in military uniform, it is possible that he was serving in the armed forces stationed abroad. (For instance, the Second Boer War was in progress from 1899 to 1902 and therefore tens of thousands of British troops were in South Africa in 1901).
