The Photographic Work of Henry Spink and Henry Spink junior

Henry Joseph Spink (1840-1892) and Henry Spink junior (1865-1943)

[ABOVE ] A photographic portrait believed to be that of  the Brighton and Cliftonville photographer Henry Joseph Spink (1840-1892).

The style of clothes worn by Henry Joseph Spink and the trade plate design on the reverse of the carte-de-visite suggests that this photograph was taken around 1878.  [P]

Henry Joseph Spink was born on 23rd July 1840 at 54 Lisson Grove North, in the Marylebone district of London, Middlesex. Henry Joseph Spink was the son of Charlotte and Henry Spink, an ironmonger by trade.

In 1860, Henry Joseph Spink, who was then working career as a watchmaker and jeweller in Birmingham, married Sarah Cooper (born c1839, Berkeley, Gloucestershire).

By 1864, Henry Joseph Spink and his wife Sarah were living in Brighton, where Henry established himself as a "Artist Photographer and Miniature Painter". Their first son, Henry Charles Spink, was born in Brighton on 27th February 1865. A second son, Samuel George Spink, was born in Brighton on 27th March 1868.

Henry Joseph Spink is first recorded as a Photographic Artist at 109 Western Road, Brighton in the Trades and Professions section of Page's Brighton Directory of 1865, which would have been compiled in the latter half of 1864. Henry Joseph Spink operated the studio at 109 Western Road, Brighton for over twenty-five years. In September 1878, Henry J. Spink was advertising a second studio at Goldstone Villas in the district west of Brighton, then known as Cliftonville, but now part of Hove.

Henry Joseph Spink's eldest son Henry Charles Spink assisted his father in his photographic work throughout his teens and for a time the firm was known as Henry Spink & Son, but around 1887 Henry Spink junior set up his own studio at 48 Preston Road, Brighton. In September 1889, the business partnership between Henry Joseph Spink and his son Henry Charles Spink was dissolved. By 1890, Henry Spink junior was operating his father's old studio at 109, Western Road, Brighton and his father, Henry Joseph Spink was running the studio at 36 Goldstone Villas, Hove.

Henry Joseph Spink died in Hove on 23rd May 1892, at the age of 52. Henry J. Spink's studio at 36 Goldstone Villas, Hove, was initially managed by his youngest son Samuel George Spink, but when Samuel and his family returned to Australia, the Hove studio passed to Henry Spink's widow, Mrs Sarah Spink, who owned the Goldstone Villas studio until her death in 1899. Henry Spink junior operated his studio at 109, Western Road, Brighton from 1890 until 1921. From 1921 until at least 1934 the studio at 109, Western Road, Brighton went under the name of Spink (Brighton) Limited.

Henry Charles Spink (generally known as Henry Spink junior) died in Ditchling, Sussex, on 13th August 1943, at the age of 78.

[ABOVE ] A photograph taken in July 2012 showing how the building at No. 109 Western Road, Brighton, looks today. When this photograph was taken Brighton Internet, Laptop & Phone Centre occupied the ground floor of the building.

As with most 19th century photographic studios, Henry Spink's premises were probably situated on the top floor of the building. There is evidence from this photo that Spinks' studio on the top floor had lots of windows and a partially glazed roof  as well as a large skylight. A good source of natural light was essential for studio portrait photography in the 1860s.

Dating a Carte-de-visite Portrait by Henry Spink of 109 Western Road, Brighton

[ABOVE] Phoebe Deadman, photographed around the time of her marriage to William Taylor in 1871. Phoebe Deadman was born in Sonning, Berkshire, in 1848, the daughter of Faith and William Deadman, an agricultural  labourer. On 27th December 1871, Phoebe Deadman, described on the marriage certificate as a spinster of 25 Great Russell Street, Brighton, married William Taylor, a twenty-one year old "Fitter & Turner" of Islington, Middlesex. Mrs Phoebe Taylor, who eventually became the proprietor of a laundry in England, travelled widely during her married life. Phoebe's daughter, Julia Alice Winnie Taylor was born in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1876 and her son, Archie Bertram Ernest Taylor, was born in Australia in January 1887. By 1901, Mrs Phoebe Taylor and her two children were living in England. Mrs Phoebe Taylor (formerly Deadman) died in Birmingham during the 2nd Quarter of 1928 at the age of 79.

On the left is a carte-de-visite portrait taken at Henry Spinks' studio at 109 Western Road, Brighton. All the circumstantial evidence indicates that this photograph was taken around 1871, but specific features of this carte-de-visite can support this date:

Type of Photograph. The photograph is a carte-de-visite (cdv), an albumen print pasted on a small card mount the same size as a conventional visiting card. Carte-de-visite (cdv) portraits were at the height of their popularity during the 1860s and the early 1870s.

The Name and Address of the Photographer and Trade Plate. Printed below the photograph and on the reverse of the card mount are the photographer's details - Henry Spink of 109 Western Road, Brighton. The photographer, Henry Joseph Spink (1840-1892) was in business at 109 Western Road for a long period of time (i.e. from about 1864 until 1889), but, fortunately, he employed a great variety of distinctive trade plates on the reverse of his cdv mounts during his twenty-five years at the Western Road studio. The trade plate on the reverse of this particular carte - the monogram H/S inside a belt cartouche labelled "LIGHT AND TRUTH" and a looped banner carrying the words "Copies may always be obtained on application" appeared on cdvs taken by Henry Spink between 1868 and 1872.

The Image. The hairstyle, the fashion of the dress and the jewellery worn by the subject is typical of the period 1868-1872. The painted studio backcloth features a picture of Brighton's West Pier which did not open to the public until October 1866.

[ABOVE] The trade plate of photographer Henry Spink of 109 Western Road, Brighton as printed on the reverse of the carte-de-visite (cdv) portrait pictured on the right (c1871). Henry Spink employed a great variety of trade plate designs on the reverse of his cdvs, but this particular design dates from the period 1868-1872. [Trade Plate Design F2.  For Henry Spink's other trade plate designs, see the gallery of Spink's cartes-de-visite in the section above].

The young woman holds a scroll and stands in front of a painted backcloth which features a picture of Brighton's West Pier which opened to the public in October 1866. It has been suggested that the scroll held by Phoebe represents her "marriage lines" or marriage certificate. Phoebe Deadman married William Taylor in Brighton in 1871.

Midget Portraits by Henry Spink junior

The "Midget Carte" was the smallest format available for commercial portrait photography. The "Midget Carte" format was introduced in the early 1880s, but these tiny photographs did not become widely popular until the 1890s. Measuring 3 inches by 1 5/8 inches, the "midget" portrait was much smaller than the carte-de-visite and was significantly cheaper than the other popular portrait formats.

John H. Blomfield of Hastings was probably the first studio photographer in Sussex to advertise midget cartes. In 1883, Blomfield was offering "the new size, Midget Cartes" at 4s 6d a dozen. This was at a time when cartes-de-visite were sold for anything up to 10s 6d a dozen.( In the early 1880s, twelve copies of a cabinet portrait would cost around 20 shillings ). By the mid 1890s, the cost of portrait photographs had fallen. In 1894, a typical mid-range Sussex studio charged 10 shillings for a dozen cabinets and 5 shillings for a set of twelve carte-de-visite portraits. The same studio priced the Midget portrait at 3s 6d per dozen.

Cabinet Portraits by Henry Spink and Henry Spink junior

The Cabinet Format

In 1866, Frederick Richard Window, a London photographer who had introduced the Diamond Cameo Carte de Visite two years earlier, put forward the idea of a larger format for portrait photography. The proposed format was a photographic print mounted on a sturdy card measuring 4
1/4 inches by 61/2 inches. (roughly 11cm x 17cm). The new format was called the Cabinet Portrait, presumably because a large photograph on a stout card could be displayed on a wooden cabinet or similar piece of furniture. The Scottish photographer George Washington Wilson (1823-1893) had produced 'cabinet' sized landscape views as early as 1862, but F.R.Window had adopted the large format specifically for portraiture.

Window believed the larger dimensions of the 'cabinet print' (4 inches by 5
1/2 inches or approximately 10.2 cm x 14.1 cm) would enable the professional photographer to demonstrate his technical and artistic skill and produce portraits of a higher quality than the small cdv would allow.

The cabinet photograph increased in popularity as the demand for carte de visite portraits fell. Much larger than the cdv, the size of the cabinet format made it more suitable for group and family portraits.

Advertisements for the 'New Cabinet Portraits' appeared in Sussex newspapers at the end of 1867. Initially, single cabinet photograph would cost 3 shillings (15p) and a dozen copies could be had for 15 shillings (75p). In 1878, the photographer Henry J. Spink who ran studios at 109 Western Road, Brighton and Goldstone Villas, Cliftonville, would make the first copy of a cabinet portrait for 2s 6d (121/2 p), while a dozen further copies would cost 12 shillings (60p).
