John White and J. White & Son of Littlehampton

[ABOVE] A photographic portrait of  a young man by John White of 32 High Street, Littlehampton. This carte-de visite portrait was produced by John White's studio around 1885.

 

[ABOVE] A carte-de-visite portrait of Louisa Pagan (1858-1908). Louisa Pagan was born in Geneva, Switzerland, but came to England as a young woman to work as a governess and teacher. In 1881, she was one of two teacher-governesses employed at Okeover Hall, Staffordshire by Haughton Charles Okeover (1825-1912), a wealthy landowner. In 1881, there were seven daughters and one son residing  at Okeover Hall. Louisa was 26 years of age when she was photographed by John White in 1884. Louisa, who never married, worked as a Governess in England until she died in 1908 aged 50.

[ABOVE] A carte-de-visite portrait of  Mabel Pocock, who was born in Egham, Surrey in 1882. She was the eldest daughter of  Percy Willmer Pocock, a solicitor, (born 1856, Pimlico, London) and Jessie Mabel Gurney (born c1861 Brixton Hill). The original owner of the photograph has inscribed on the back of the carte,"A school friend, Mabel Pocock - Father at the College, Englefield Green". Percy Pocock, worked as a solicitor for the Royal Holloway College, at Englefield Green. This photograph was taken around 1900, when Mabel was about 18 years of age.

[ABOVE] John White's publicity on the back of the cartes he produced after 1880 generally include the words " Speciality - Babies Portraits by Instantaneous Process".

[ABOVE] A photographic portrait of a girl holding a young baby, a carte-de-visite by John White, Photographer at the Littlehampton School of Photography, 32 High Street, Littlehampton. (c1878) This photograph was taken before the availability of dry plates and instantaneous photography. john white was justly proud of his photographs of babies and young children (see above) and he later declared that "Babies Portraits" were his "Speciality".

[ABOVE] A cabinet portrait of Frida Weber by John White, Art Photographer, 32 High Street, Littlehampton. On the reverse of the cabinet mount are the words "Frida Weber, 1888".

[ABOVE] A photographic portrait of Henry Fitzalan-Howard, 15th Duke of Norfolk (1847-1917), issued as  a picture postcard by John White & Son around 1908. The Duke of Norfolk played a leading part in Littlehampton affairs.
